Pennsylvania measles outbreak reaches 693 cases and four deaths

PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – Pennsylvania health officials have confirmed that an unvaccinated 40-year-old Jefferson County woman died with an active measles infection. She died on September 12 during the state’s largest measles outbreak in more than three decades. Laboratory testing detected the virus in a specimen collected from the woman. State officials later classified her death as measles-associated after reviewing the case and supporting medical information. Her death became Pennsylvania’s third linked to measles this year.

Pennsylvania measles outbreak puts vaccination and public health protection in focus.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office initially reported that the woman died from complications associated with a probable measles infection. County officials later said laboratory testing confirmed an active infection at the time of her death. The woman had not received the measles vaccine. Officials did not release her name, citing family privacy. The case showed that serious measles complications can affect adults as well as children during an outbreak.

Pennsylvania’s outbreak has expanded rapidly since cases began increasing in the spring. The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 693 confirmed measles cases across 38 counties as of September 14. The state had recorded 133 hospitalizations by that date. Only four confirmed cases involved people considered appropriately vaccinated for their age. State data show that most infections have occurred among people without full protection from the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.

State outbreak expands as cases rise

Health officials confirmed another measles-associated death in Mifflin County on September 15, raising Pennsylvania’s 2026 total to four. That case involved an unvaccinated 18-year-old resident. The county coroner determined that the teenager died from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare neurological complication linked to measles. Pennsylvania had previously confirmed two measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County on August 25. Those cases marked the state’s first such deaths in 35 years.

Measles spreads through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. A rash usually follows several days later and often begins on the head before spreading downward. Symptoms can appear seven to 21 days after exposure, according to state public health guidance.

    Vaccination remains central to prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 3,294 confirmed U.S. measles cases for 2026 as of September 10. Cases had been reported by 47 jurisdictions. National data also show declining MMR vaccination coverage among kindergarten students. Coverage fell to 92.4% during the 2025-2026 school year, compared with 95.2% in 2019-2020. Public health guidance says community protection is strongest when vaccination coverage exceeds 95%, limiting opportunities for the virus to spread.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide about 97% protection against measles, according to public health authorities. Measles can cause pneumonia, brain swelling and other severe complications. Pennsylvania officials say nearly one in five identified measles patients in the current outbreak has required hospitalization. People who develop symptoms after a possible exposure should contact a health care provider before arriving for care. Advance notice helps medical facilities limit additional exposure to patients and staff.
